What it is
Quern: Undying Thoughts is a first-person puzzle adventure about arriving on an isolated island, losing the way home and slowly working out what happened there. Its Nintendo Switch version launches in the UK on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, almost ten years after the original game appeared on Steam. As of 1 October 2026, it remains unreleased.
This is an exploration-led mystery rather than an action game. The island is filled with forgotten places, unusual machinery, notes and clues, while the puzzles are designed to connect across the wider world instead of behaving like a straight line of separate challenges. The Switch edition is digital-only as currently announced, with a listed UK price of £13.49 and a 10% pre-order saving.

Story and setting
You arrive on the island of Quern through a portal. It closes behind you almost immediately, cutting off the route home. The island appears empty, but it has clearly been inhabited: someone worked there, built machines, left notes and posed questions that remain for you to answer. The reason for your arrival is part of the mystery, not something explained at the outset.
The story is told through movement and observation. New locations expose further traces of the island’s past, and the environments provide both the setting and the evidence needed to understand it. The confirmed material keeps the plot deliberately broad, so details about the people who lived on Quern and the full meaning of the player’s presence are best discovered in the game itself.
How it plays
Quern is played entirely from a first-person perspective. Progress comes from examining your surroundings, interpreting clues and experimenting with the island’s mechanisms. The puzzles become more demanding as you move deeper into Quern, combining logic with close observation rather than relying on speed or reflexes.
Its defining idea is that the puzzles are interconnected. A mechanism introduced in one building may return elsewhere, while knowledge gained in one area can change how an earlier problem looks. The game encourages you to explore at your own pace, keep track of useful information and reconsider apparent dead ends once you understand more of the island. It is a single-player experience, with no confirmed online multiplayer or co-operative mode.
Switch release, price and editions
The UK Nintendo Switch release is scheduled for Tuesday, 6 October 2026. Nintendo lists it as a digital edition priced at £13.49, while the launch announcement confirms a 10% pre-order saving. No cartridge edition or physical UK retail release has been announced.
The Switch version is published by Blue Brain Games and is compatible with Nintendo Switch 2, but Nintendo describes it as a Switch release rather than a separately announced native Switch 2 edition. The original game is also available on Windows, Mac and Linux through Steam, on PS5 through the UK PlayStation Store, and on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Those earlier versions are separate releases, not included with the Switch purchase.
Trailers and showcases
The Nintendo Switch Announcement Trailer accompanied the 22 September 2026 release announcement. It presents first-person exploration across Quern’s island scenery, forgotten locations and unusual machinery, establishing the setting and the idea of puzzles linked across the environment without revealing the central mystery. It does not confirm Switch-specific resolution, frame rate or performance details.
The earlier Official Gameplay Trailer 2018 was published by Zadbox Entertainment on 22 December 2017. Despite the title, its YouTube listing dates it to 2017, and it covers the original PC, Mac and Linux version. It demonstrates the exploration-led structure, environmental investigation and reusable puzzle mechanics that define the game, but it should not be treated as evidence of how the Switch edition performs.
What we still don't know
Nintendo has confirmed the date, digital format, price, single-player structure and Switch 2 compatibility, but the exact UK eShop launch time has not been published. There are also no confirmed Switch-specific details for resolution, frame rate, loading times, controls beyond standard supported play modes or visual improvements.
There is no announced physical edition, Switch-specific downloadable content, expansion or extra campaign. No Game Pass or PlayStation Plus inclusion has been announced as at 1 October 2026, and there has been no separate Nintendo Direct, Indie World or other showcase confirmed for the Switch release. That leaves the £13.49 digital eShop version as the only announced UK edition.
