What it is

Don’t Fret is a first-person psychological horror adventure set inside Harmonic Heights, a prestigious music school hiding a dark secret. You play as Fret, a sentient guitar trying to survive hostile creatures, solve music-based puzzles and recover memories that explain how he ended up there. The game is still unreleased in the UK. Thursday 1 October 2026 is the announced date, although the UK PlayStation Store still lists the release date as to be determined.

Story and setting

Harmonic Heights is presented as a nightmare music school rather than a conventional campus. Fret wakes inside it with no clear explanation for his situation, then has to explore its halls, classrooms, underground areas and wider grounds while piecing together hidden memories. The school’s instruments, sounds and enemies are all tied to the central mystery.

The story is being delivered through exploration, memory devices, environmental clues and cinematic scenes. The developers have also described a broader setting that includes classrooms, underground tunnels, courtyards and gondola rides, suggesting a more varied world than a sequence of identical corridors. The tone has become darker and more mature since the 2024 demo, with the redesigned game aiming for sustained psychological tension rather than simple mascot-horror jump scares.

How it plays

Music is the main system running through Don’t Fret. Pianos, guitars, drums and other instruments form the basis of puzzles, while sound can also attract or mislead enemies. Fret can use objects and environmental noises as decoys, break line of sight, dodge attackers and stun them when escape is not immediately possible. This is primarily an evade-and-outsmart horror game, not a conventional combat-focused action title.

Fret’s evolving guitar tuner is the key tool. The developer says it can help monitor elements such as health, stamina and battery, while the store descriptions also position it as part of the game’s puzzle-solving and survival systems. The PlayStation listing confirms volume controls, basic subtitles for the main story and characters, and the ability to pause during offline play.

Trailers and demos

The announcement trailer arrived in March 2024 and introduced the game’s central idea: a living guitar trapped in a sinister musical world. The first public demo, Don’t Fret: The Audition, launched on Steam on 18 October 2024 as a standalone prologue connected to the full game. It remains useful as an early look, but the finished game has since undergone substantial changes to its characters, tone, environments and systems.

The October 2025 ID@Xbox Showcase trailer showed new environments, expanded gameplay, musical puzzles and a first look at the voice cast. On 6 June 2026, the Future Games Show Summer Showcase presented a release-date trailer, confirmed the 1 October target and highlighted the nightmare music-school setting, sound-based survival and the sentient-guitar premise. A newer demo was also promoted by the developer during Steam Next Fest in June 2026.

Platforms, editions and UK price

Don’t Fret is announced for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Xbox version is listed as an Xbox Play Anywhere title, with PC and Xbox Series X|S versions included under that programme. Steam lists English interface, audio and subtitles, while the UK PlayStation listing confirms basic story subtitles and volume controls.

No UK price, physical edition, deluxe edition or retailer pre-order has been announced. The UK PlayStation Store still shows the game as announced with a release date to be determined, while Steam lists 1 October 2026 as the planned release date and says the full game is not yet available. No PEGI rating has appeared on the UK listing. Xbox’s US page carries an ESRB Teen rating for violence and blood, but that is not a UK classification.

What we still don’t know

The exact UK launch time, final UK RRP, physical availability, edition details and whether the PlayStation version will release on the announced date all remain unclear. There is also no confirmed announcement for Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus inclusion. The game is single-player, with no online multiplayer or co-operative mode announced.

The developer has not clearly confirmed the game engine in the official store pages or developer updates reviewed. Unreal Engine 5 is commonly listed by third-party databases, but it should not be treated as confirmed until Scary Kid Studios or Digital Pajamas says so directly. The final campaign length is also unconfirmed, so the earlier estimates attached to development updates should not be treated as a finished-game guarantee.

Should you pre-order?

There is no sensible reason to pre-order yet because there is no UK price, no confirmed PlayStation launch date and no edition information. The free Steam demo is the safest way to judge whether the music-led puzzles, stealth and stylised horror appeal to you. Console players should wait for their regional store pages to add a firm date and price before making a purchase decision.
