What it is

Metaphor: ReFantazio is Studio Zero and ATLUS's fantasy role-playing game, coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in the UK on Thursday, 12 November 2026. Originally released elsewhere in October 2024, it combines turn-based party battles with real-time attacks, class customisation, exploration and a calendar-style approach to managing your time.

The Switch 2 release is a single-player version of the complete game rather than a sequel. Its story follows a young man and the fairy Gallica as they travel through the United Kingdom of Euchronia, trying to save a prince believed to be dead while competing in a magical contest to decide the kingdom's next ruler.

Story and setting

The United Kingdom of Euchronia is thrown into turmoil after the assassination of its king. The late ruler's Royal Magic then begins a tournament for the throne, allowing candidates from across the kingdom to compete for the crown. The setting includes eight tribes, distinct cultures and a society marked by discrimination, inequality and political unrest.

The protagonist is travelling with Gallica, a fairy who helps him break the curse placed on his childhood friend, the prince of Euchronia. The prince is officially believed to be dead, so the pair must gather allies and enter the royal tournament themselves. The journey takes them across towns, dungeons and wastelands aboard a gauntlet runner, a large mobile base used for travel and preparation.

How it plays

Metaphor uses two forms of combat. Weaker enemies can be attacked directly while exploring, allowing you to stun or dispatch them in the overworld. More serious encounters move into turn-based Squad Battles, where party order, skills, weaknesses and resources matter. The combat is not purely traditional turn-based RPG fare, since real-time attacks and overworld positioning feed into the larger system.

The main character and his allies awaken Archetypes, supernatural embodiments that function as flexible job classes. Each Archetype grants a different set of abilities, and party members can be developed and combined in different ways. The game features more than 40 Archetypes, while bonds with Followers unlock further powers and improve the group.

Time management is central. Days can be spent accepting quests, exploring dungeons, hunting for treasure or travelling between destinations. Other periods can be used to strengthen relationships, improve personal virtues and prepare the party. Choosing how to spend limited time is part of the strategy, rather than a background feature.

Switch 2 trailers and showcases

The Switch 2 version was announced during Nintendo's June 2026 presentation, with ATLUS releasing an announce trailer on 9 June 2026. The footage established the 12 November release date and showed the fantasy setting, the royal tournament, Archetype transformations and the mixture of exploration and combat. SEGA confirmed the port on 10 June 2026.

On 26 August 2026, off-screen docked gameplay from the Gamescom build showed the Switch 2 version running through exploration and battles. ATLUS's pre-order trailer, published on 31 August 2026, went into more detail: it showed the protagonist awakening an Archetype, using physical and magical attacks, meeting prospective allies and beginning the quest to lift the prince's curse. It also reinforced that the Switch 2 release contains the same broad story and systems as the established game.

No official resolution, frame-rate target or Switch 2-specific visual mode has been announced. The confirmed additions are the Switch 2 platform, touch-screen support and TV, tabletop and handheld play.

Platforms, editions and UK price

For this release, the confirmed platform is Nintendo Switch 2. The physical standard edition is a game-key card, not a full-capacity cartridge. The digital standard edition is listed at £34.99 on the UK eShop, while Smyths currently lists the physical standard edition at £39.99. Prices can change before launch.

The digital Guidebook Edition is listed at £44.99 and includes the game, a 55-page Essential Digital Strategy Guide, digital artbook, digital soundtrack and Persona 5 and Shin Megami Tensei V costume and battle-music sets. The £59.99 ATLUS 35th Digital Anniversary Edition adds the guide, the artbook and soundtrack, an ATLUS history book, an ATLUS all-time-best soundtrack and eight costume and battle-music sets based on ATLUS games.

Pre-order and early-purchase bonuses include Archetype experience items and an Adventurer's Journey Pack containing money, healing items, revival items and food. The physical bonus is available while stocks last. Nintendo eShop pre-orders and UK retailer pre-orders are open.

What remains unconfirmed

ATLUS and Nintendo have not published a UK launch time, a Switch 2 preload schedule, a Switch 2 demo or details of any save-transfer or upgrade arrangement for people who already own the game elsewhere. There is also no confirmed Switch 2-exclusive story expansion or new campaign content.

The existing game has appeared on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, but the Switch 2 edition is the only Nintendo platform release currently confirmed. No Game Pass or PlayStation Plus entitlement has been announced for the Switch 2 version, and Nintendo has not confirmed any UK retailer-exclusive bonus or special physical collector's edition.

Should you pre-order?

The standard digital price is notably lower than the original game's launch price, and the Switch 2 version is a straightforward way to play ATLUS's fantasy RPG in handheld mode. The Guidebook Edition is only worth considering if you want the strategy guide and the two included costume and music packs; the 35th Anniversary Edition is aimed at fans who want the larger collection of ATLUS-themed extras.

The main reason to wait is technical information. Until ATLUS confirms the Switch 2 version's resolution, frame rate and performance targets, it is difficult to judge how much it improves on the 2024 releases. For newcomers, however, no previous Persona or Shin Megami Tensei game is required.

Not yet confirmed

  • No UK launch time or preload window has been published.
  • Switch 2 resolution, frame-rate target, performance modes and the extent of any visual upgrade are unconfirmed.
  • No Switch 2 demo, save-transfer arrangement or upgrade offer from the existing versions has been announced.
  • No Switch 2-exclusive story content or new campaign has been confirmed.
  • No UK-specific retailer bonus or physical collector's edition has been confirmed.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version launches on Thursday, 12 November 2026. Nintendo has confirmed the date but not a UK-specific release time.

Is Metaphor: ReFantazio coming to the original Nintendo Switch?

No. The newly announced Nintendo version is for Nintendo Switch 2 only.

Does Metaphor: ReFantazio have online multiplayer?

No. It is a single-player RPG. Nintendo Switch Online support is limited to features such as save-data cloud functionality, not multiplayer.

Is the physical Switch 2 version a proper cartridge?

No. ATLUS says the physical release uses a game-key card, so it is not a full-capacity cartridge.
