What it is
Octopath Traveler II is a large, single-player Japanese role-playing game built around eight protagonists, eight personal stories and a world that can be explored in almost any order. The Nintendo Switch 2 edition launches in the UK on Thursday 1 October 2026, with improved resolution and frame rate over the 2023 Nintendo Switch release. It remains the same substantial adventure rather than a new sequel, remake or expansion, and it is designed as a standalone story for newcomers.

Story and setting
The game takes place in Solistia, a world divided into eastern and western continents by the sea. It is a period of industrial change, with large ships crossing newly established routes and steam-powered technology beginning to reshape everyday life. Prosperity and spectacle sit alongside war, disease and poverty, giving the setting a broader social range than the more traditionally medieval world of the first game.
You begin as one of eight travellers, each from a different background and driven by a different goal. Their stories can be tackled in a flexible order, while later cross-story chapters give the cast more direct interaction than the original game. Octopath Traveler II is independent from its predecessor, so there is no need to play the first game before starting this one.
How it plays
This is a turn-based RPG with a fixed, angled viewpoint and the series’ distinctive HD-2D presentation, combining pixel-art characters with three-dimensional environments, lighting and camera effects. Solistia changes between day and night at the press of a button. That alters enemy encounters, non-player character routines and the Path Actions available to each traveller, making the time of day useful for both exploration and problem-solving.
Combat revolves around identifying enemy weaknesses, reducing Shield Points and putting opponents into a Break state before spending stored Boost Points on stronger attacks. Each traveller has a distinct job, skill set, Path Actions and Latent Power, while secondary jobs allow more freedom in party construction. You can travel by foot, canoe and seafaring vessel, and the game adds more direct interaction between party members through shared story chapters and travel dialogue.
What has been added since launch
The original version released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC on 24 February 2023, followed by Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S versions on 5 June 2024. A free version 1.1.0 update added Extra Battles after the main story, along with revised credits, graphical corrections and new tutorial text. There is no separate paid story expansion listed for Octopath Traveler II.
The Switch 2 edition is the latest platform release. Square Enix describes it as optimised for improved resolution and frame rate, but has not published a fixed resolution or frame-rate target. The game supports handheld, tabletop and TV modes, and Nintendo lists an estimated download size of 6.6GB.
Platforms, editions and UK price
The Nintendo Switch 2 edition costs £49.99 digitally in the UK. A £59.99 digital bundle contains both Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II. Square Enix has also confirmed a physical Switch 2 bundle containing both games, but the UK price and retailer availability for that physical package are not clearly published in the official UK listings.
The Switch 2 version is a separate product from the original Nintendo Switch release. There is no upgrade pack, and save data is not compatible between the two versions. The Switch 2 release date is Thursday 1 October 2026; Square Enix notes that exact release times can vary by region. The game is not included with PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass because this edition is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2.
Reception and verdict
The 2023 release was well received, although reviewers were divided over how far it moved beyond the first game. Nintendo Life awarded it 9/10, praising its combat, character stories, progression and presentation, while Game Informer gave it 8.5/10. The main criticism was that the sequel refines the original formula rather than fundamentally reinventing it, and some reviewers found the individual stories less tightly connected than the party structure suggests.
That makes Octopath Traveler II an especially straightforward recommendation for players who enjoy traditional turn-based RPGs, flexible exploration and job-based party building. The Switch 2 edition offers the cleanest console presentation, but existing Switch owners should note that the improvements are primarily technical and require buying the game again rather than using an upgrade path.
Not yet confirmed
- Nintendo and Square Enix have not published an exact UK eShop release time; release times may vary by region.
- The UK RRP and retailer availability for the physical Switch 2 bundle have not been clearly confirmed in the official UK listings.
- No further paid DLC or expansion beyond the existing Extra Battles update has been announced for the Switch 2 edition.
- A separate Switch 2-specific critical consensus has not yet formed at launch; the published scores are primarily for the 2023 release.
Octopath Traveler II: your questions
Do I need to play the first Octopath Traveler before Octopath Traveler II?
No. Octopath Traveler II has a new cast, a separate setting and a self-contained story. There are a few references and Easter eggs for returning players, but the first game is not required.
Can I transfer my Nintendo Switch save to the Switch 2 version?
No. Square Enix says save data is incompatible between the original Nintendo Switch version and the Nintendo Switch 2 edition. There is also no announced upgrade pack for existing owners.
Does Octopath Traveler II have online multiplayer?
No. It is a single-player RPG. Nintendo Switch Online is only relevant to system features such as Save Data Cloud, not multiplayer.
Is there a demo for Octopath Traveler II on Switch 2?
A Prologue Demo is listed for the game, but its save data is not compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 version. Treat it as a trial rather than a transferable opening save.
Is Octopath Traveler II an action RPG?
No. It is a traditional turn-based RPG. Its battles focus on exploiting weaknesses, breaking enemy shields, managing Boost Points and combining jobs and skills.
