Story and setting

The game takes place on Orsterra, a fantasy continent divided into eight regions. You begin as one of eight travellers: Ophilia the Cleric, Cyrus the Scholar, Tressa the Merchant, Olberic the Warrior, Primrose the Dancer, Alfyn the Apothecary, Therion the Thief or H’aanit the Hunter. Each has a personal goal, a distinct class and a four-chapter storyline. After completing the opening chapter, you are free to travel across the map, recruit the other seven and decide which stories to pursue next.

The structure is deliberately episodic rather than one tightly interwoven party drama. That gives you considerable freedom, but it also means the individual stories do not always connect as naturally as the combat and exploration systems. Side quests, optional areas and a late-game storyline provide more links between the cast and the wider history of Orsterra.

How it plays

Octopath Traveler is a single-player, turn-based RPG viewed from an angled, isometric-style perspective during exploration, with side-on battle scenes. Its central combat systems are Break and Boost. Enemies have weaknesses to weapon types or elements; exploit enough of them to reduce an enemy’s shield points and it becomes Broken, losing an action and taking increased damage. Characters accumulate Boost Points by holding back, then spend them to strengthen attacks, healing, support skills or multi-hit actions.

Each traveller also has a Path Action for dealing with non-player characters. Therion can steal, Tressa can purchase items, Cyrus can scrutinise people for information, Olberic can challenge them, Primrose can allure them into battle and the other characters have their own alternatives. These abilities affect side quests, access to items and the way you solve problems in towns. Character jobs can be supplemented with secondary jobs found at shrines, allowing plenty of room for party-building and experimentation.

Switch 2 edition

The Switch 2 version keeps the original game’s story, combat and content, but improves its resolution and frame rate compared with the Nintendo Switch release. The digital download is listed at 3.1GB, and the game supports handheld, tabletop and TV modes. Square Enix has not published an exact resolution or frame-rate target, so claims about a specific 60fps mode should be treated as unconfirmed.

This is a separate product rather than an upgrade pack. Square Enix says there are no plans to sell an upgrade path from the original Switch version, and save data is incompatible between the two versions. The older Switch game is supported on Switch 2, but anyone wanting the sharper, smoother edition must buy the Switch 2 release separately.

DLC, updates and reception

The original game was presented as a complete single-player release, and no downloadable story expansion, online mode or multiplayer campaign has been announced for the Switch 2 edition. The post-launch history is mainly about ports: it later reached PC, Xbox, Game Pass, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, while a Chinese-language support patch was added to the PC version in 2019. The 2026 Switch 2 edition adds technical improvements rather than new chapters or a new gameplay mode.

The original received generally favourable reviews, although critics disagreed about its fragmented storytelling. Nintendo Life awarded the Switch release 9/10, praising its combat, music, visual style and freedom, while GameSpot gave it 8/10 and criticised the shallow, separate character stories. The Switch version holds an 83/100 Metacritic score. A separate critical consensus for the Switch 2 edition has not yet formed.

UK price and buying advice

The standard Switch 2 edition is listed at £49.99 in the UK, with both digital and physical availability shown by official listings. A digital Switch 2 bundle containing Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II is also available, listed at £59.99 in UK store listings. The bundle is the better value if you want both games, but the original is a self-contained story and does not require Octopath Traveler II or Octopath Traveler 0 first.

For a new player, the main question is whether you enjoy methodical turn-based combat and a game that lets you set its own pace. The Switch 2 edition is the definitive console version of the original, but owners of the older release should weigh the technical improvements against having to purchase the game again and start without compatible save data.

Not yet confirmed

  • Nintendo and Square Enix have not published an exact Switch 2 resolution or frame-rate target.
  • No additional story campaign, New Game Plus mode or other new gameplay mode has been confirmed for the Switch 2 edition.
  • An exact UK eShop launch time was not specified in the official product listing.

Can I transfer my Switch save to the Switch 2 version?
