What it is

RetroSpace is a first-person immersive sim from The Wild Gentlemen, published by Kwalee. It launches in the UK today, Thursday 1 October 2026, combining stealth, shooting, exploration and dark science-fiction humour aboard a space station trapped inside a black hole. Its low-poly retro-futurist style draws heavily on 1960s and 1970s science fiction, while its systems are aimed at players who prefer solving problems rather than simply following a shooting gallery.

Story and setting

The story begins in 2177, when humanity’s AURORA fleet is searching for a new home. Its floating stations carry sleeping colonists, protected by robots, androids and teams of janitors. When Aurora 5 is swallowed by a sentient black hole, its corridors become infested with strange animal and plant hybrids, and the station begins jumping between two different periods in time.

You play an unnamed janitor who has to find a way through the wrecked station and work out what happened. The tone moves between cosmic horror, black comedy and deliberately absurd disco-punk science fiction. The central question is not simply whether you can escape, but whether you are willing to risk yourself to save humanity or concentrate on surviving.

How it plays

RetroSpace is built around choice. You can sneak through dark areas, avoid enemies completely, create diversions, set traps, hack security systems, exploit environmental hazards or fight directly. The developers present Aurora 5 as a large, interconnected station rather than a sequence of isolated levels, with shortcuts, hidden routes and previously inaccessible areas opening as you explore. A relatively safe central hub gives you somewhere to regroup.

Enemies are intended to behave differently, so learning their abilities and weaknesses matters as much as aiming accurately. Mutamods provide another layer of progression, improving stealth, combat, exploration or mobility. Their drawbacks are important: upgrades can carry unexpected and irreversible side effects. Death is also part of the design. Aurora can create new clones of the janitor, but repeated resurrection brings degenerations and leaves you with the job of recovering equipment from a previous body.

UK launch, platforms and price

The UK release date is Thursday 1 October 2026. The PlayStation Store lists a 3pm UTC launch time, which is 4pm BST in Britain. RetroSpace is confirmed for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Steam has also offered a free demo, although the demo is not a substitute for the full campaign.

No UK RRP is currently displayed on the principal store pages, and there is no confirmed UK price for a standard, Deluxe or collector’s edition. No boxed release or UK retailer pre-order has been confirmed either. The safest buying advice is therefore to check the relevant digital storefront on launch day rather than rely on early price listings.

Performance, patches and extra content

The PC version lists a minimum target of approximately 1080p at around 30 frames per second on Low or Balanced settings, with the recommended specification targeting 1080p at 60fps or higher on High. Xbox lists the game as optimised for Series X|S. No official console resolution or frame-rate targets have been published.

The only hands-on console review available at launch from the sources checked is Duuro Plays’ PS5 review, which scored the game 8 out of 10. It praised the station’s exploration, creature design, tools and atmosphere, but reported that the PS5 version rarely held 60fps and contained irritating bugs. No post-launch DLC, extra mode or major content expansion has been announced. The latest official update notes found before release concerned the Steam demo, including balance changes, movement improvements, weapon tweaks and more than 100 minor fixes.

Reception and who it suits

Critical coverage is still limited on launch day. Duuro Plays’ 8/10 verdict describes RetroSpace as an uneven but memorable immersive sim, with strong exploration and creative tools held back by performance and occasional bugs. Metacritic had no critic aggregate when checked, and Steam had not yet accumulated user reviews in the available listing, so there is not yet a meaningful consensus score.

RetroSpace should appeal to players who miss the slower, more experimental style of System Shock, Deus Ex and Thief, particularly those happy to search for solutions rather than follow explicit waypoints. It is less obviously suited to anyone looking for a polished, linear shooter or online play. The free PC demo is the best way to judge whether its old-fashioned navigation, stealth systems and deliberately strange humour work for you.
