Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve

Story and setting

The campaign takes place in July 2029, after the Republic of Sotoa launches a lightning invasion of the Federation of Central Usea. The FCU capital, Theve, falls, its navy is broken and civilians are forced into retreat aboard the ageing aircraft carrier Endurance. The carrier rescues REX, an FCU pilot found adrift at sea, and gives him the callsign Wings of Theve.

That name once belonged to Jan Cope, a celebrated FCU pilot whose reputation was used to keep military and civilian morale alive. The game’s latest story material confirms that the legend was manufactured rather than earned, and that REX inherits the title after Cope’s death. He leads Joker Flight with Ellington Baxter, Tasha Severskya and William Coster, attempting to push back Sotoa and retake Theve. The Endurance acts as the campaign’s principal base, with the story also focusing on the relationships between its crew and pilots.

How it plays

This remains an arcade flight shooter rather than a conventional simulation. The controls are designed around responsive 360-degree movement, fast dogfights, missile evasion and high-G turns, with players able to fly both real-world and original aircraft. Before each sortie, you select an aircraft, special weapons and upgrade parts around the mission objective, then issue real-time attack or cover commands to your wingmen.

The battlefields are intended to react to what happens in the air. Weather, layered cloud systems, visibility, radio chatter, enemy behaviour and objectives can change during a mission. Large superweapons are another focus, with damage possible outside their usual target zones and wreckage capable of triggering chain reactions. The returning Annihilation Battle format gives pilots a time limit, resupply points and several enemy facilities to destroy in whatever order they choose.

The game also includes first-person story sequences between sorties, while the campaign’s cinematic presentation follows the pressure placed on REX and Joker Flight. Announced difficulty settings are Rookie, Pilot, Veteran and Elite, and can be changed during play.

What the trailers and showcases have shown

The announcement trailer, released at The Game Awards on 11 December 2025, established the FCU, Sotoa, the Strangereal setting, the campaign’s identity-and-duty storyline and the use of Unreal Engine 5. The 2 June 2026 release-date trailer introduced the Endurance, the Land Battleship and further campaign threats, while confirming the 2 October launch date and three-day early access for Deluxe Edition owners.

A systems walkthrough on 4 June showed aircraft customisation, wingman commands, dynamic weather, elite ace squadrons and the new approach to fighting colossal weapons. The Gamescom presentation on 28 August focused on campaign mission four, The Fall of the Numbered Fleets, in which REX ambushes enemy fleets around Newfield Island while facing the former FCU pilots of Shark Flight.

The 1 September Online 101 presentation confirmed ACE COMBAT ONLINE. It includes a cross-platform Air Base lobby for up to 100 players, avatar customisation, Co-Op Assault, Co-Op Warfare, limited-time Scramble and Emergency Sortie missions, 4v4 events and eight-player deathmatches. The 14 September story trailer showed the Shadow 22 rival squadron and confirmed the return of Annihilation Battle. The latest 25 September overview filled in more detail on the FCU, the Endurance and progression between missions.

Platforms, editions and UK price

Ace Combat 8 launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. The UK digital Standard Edition is £64.99 on PS5 and Xbox, or £54.99 on Steam. The Deluxe Edition is £84.99 on PS5 and Xbox, or £74.99 on Steam. The Deluxe package includes the base game, three-day early access, a Premium Ace Pass Plus voucher and the Customisable Cosmetic Set. The latter contains aircraft skins, Tasha’s online-lobby outfit and the Scarlet missile-smoke effect.

Pre-ordering any edition before launch adds the F-14A and a port of Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, the 2006 PlayStation 2 game. It is a port rather than a remaster. The Joker Flight Pack includes the Deluxe Edition, a 208-page Aces at War: A History 2029 book, two soundtrack vinyl records, a slipcase and slipmat. The Premium Joker Flight Pack adds a woven patch and an LED gaming mousemat. The EU Bandai Namco store lists these collector packages in euros, but does not currently show a UK-pound price.

The published European timing is midnight CEST on 2 October, which corresponds to 11pm BST on Thursday, 1 October, for UK digital players. Early access is scheduled for midnight CEST on 29 September, or 11pm BST on Monday, 28 September. UK pre-orders are available through the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store and Steam, with physical PS5 and Xbox listings also appearing at retailers including Amazon UK, Very, TheGameCollection and Currys.

What we still don't know

Bandai Namco has not confirmed the campaign’s length, the full aircraft roster, the complete mission count or the precise structure of post-launch content. The Premium Ace Pass has been described as a two-monthly reward system, but its full UK pricing, season schedule and future aircraft have not been detailed.

There is no confirmed PS VR2 or other VR mode, and neither Game Pass nor PS Plus catalogue inclusion has been announced as of 27 September 2026. Console online play requires PlayStation Plus on PS5 or an Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate subscription on Xbox, but those subscriptions do not replace the need to buy the game.
