Story and setting

Mickey’s trouble begins when an experiment involving magic ink goes wrong. He is pulled into Wasteland, a world created for characters and ideas that Disney left behind, and must deal with the consequences of the damage he caused. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt Disney’s first major cartoon creation, is central to the setting, alongside familiar figures such as Yen Sid and Pete.

Wasteland is divided into distinct areas linked by classic cartoon-inspired platforming stages. These sequences draw on Disney animated films and shorts, while the main 3D areas mix exploration, environmental puzzles, combat and collectible hunting. The remake keeps the original game’s unusual, slightly darker Disney premise rather than turning it into a straightforward Mickey adventure.

How it plays

The defining mechanic is Mickey’s magic brush. Paint can restore objects, repair parts of the environment and make enemies friendly, while thinner removes material, changes the landscape and reveals hidden passages. The game presents these as meaningful choices, with different approaches affecting Mickey’s journey and the fate of Wasteland.

Rebrushed adds dash, sprinting and ground pound moves, giving Mickey more options for traversal and combat than he had in the Wii original. Purple Lamp has also rebuilt the visuals, camera and interface, while retaining the 3D platforming structure, side-scrolling projector stages, Disney pins, creative challenges and secrets. It is a third-person, single-player game with no co-operative or competitive online mode.

Switch 2 version, editions and UK price

The Switch 2 edition launches on 6 October 2026, with the UK release listed for 2pm BST. Nintendo confirms higher-resolution visuals, an improved frame rate and mouse-style controls using the Joy-Con 2 controller. The Costume Pack DLC is included with a direct purchase of the Switch 2 version. No numerical resolution or frame-rate target has been published.

The standard digital edition is priced at £34.99, while Smyths currently lists the physical Game-Key Card edition at £34.99. It is not a full cartridge release. THQ Nordic’s reported FAQ says there is no Switch 2 pre-order, despite the current Smyths listing, so retailer availability should be treated cautiously. Owners of the 2024 Nintendo Switch version, whether digital or physical, are due a free Switch 2 upgrade patch. Existing saves can carry over through that upgrade route, but a separately purchased Switch 2 product does not use the original version’s save data. A Switch 2 Collector’s Edition has not been announced; the earlier Collector’s Edition was tied to the 2024 release.

Trailers and showcases

The 21 February 2024 announcement trailer introduced the remake, its rebuilt visuals, the Wasteland setting and the paint-and-thinner system. The 2 August 2024 THQ Nordic Digital Showcase trailer gave a broader gameplay look at platforming, exploration and Mickey’s brush powers, while confirming the 24 September 2024 launch date for the original release across Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and PC.

A playable-demo trailer followed on 27 August 2024. The 17 September developer diary focused on Purple Lamp’s remake work, including the improved presentation, camera and interface, and discussed the new dash, sprint and ground-pound abilities. The 24 September release trailer marked the launch of the original versions. On 18 March 2026, THQ Nordic announced the Switch 2 edition, highlighting its higher resolution, faster frame rate, Joy-Con 2 mouse controls and bundled Costume Pack.

What we still do not know

The publisher has not confirmed a Switch 2-specific Collector’s Edition, additional post-launch DLC, review embargo details or any further platform versions. There is also no announced Game Pass or PlayStation Plus inclusion, although those services do not apply to the upcoming Switch 2 release. The exact technical targets for resolution and frame rate remain unconfirmed, as does the final UK launch-day stock position for the Game-Key Card edition.
