Story and setting

Kingdom Hearts III follows Sora, Donald Duck and Goofy as they search for the seven guardians of light before Master Xehanort can trigger another Keyblade War. Riku and King Mickey pursue their own leads, while Sora seeks the power of waking and tries to reunite with friends including Kairi. Organization XIII remains the central threat, with the story continuing directly from the events of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.

The adventure moves between original Kingdom Hearts locations and worlds based on Disney and Pixar films. Confirmed settings include Olympus from Hercules, Andy’s Toy Box from Toy Story, the Kingdom of Corona from Tangled, Arendelle from Frozen, Monstropolis from Monsters, Inc., San Fransokyo from Big Hero 6 and the Caribbean from Pirates of the Caribbean. Each world has its own cast, visual style and story thread rather than simply acting as a themed combat arena.

How it plays

This is a third-person action RPG built around real-time Keyblade combat. Sora fights alongside Donald and Goofy, using normal attacks, magic, items and team-up techniques with Disney characters from the world he is visiting. Battles are fast and deliberately spectacular, but there is still room to change abilities, manage equipment and choose how to spend magic and other resources.

Keyblade Formchanges alter the weapon’s shape and give Sora different attacks, while players can switch between several equipped Keyblades during combat. Attractions bring attacks inspired by Disney theme-park rides into battles, and Links can call in characters such as Wreck-It Ralph or Stitch. The Gummi Ship returns for travel between worlds, with customisation and space encounters between major locations. Re Mind adds a separate story chapter set around the game’s climax, alongside the Limitcut and Secret episodes and additional boss fights.

Platforms, editions and UK price

The new version launches in the UK on 8 October 2026 for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S. Microsoft Store on Windows is also listed for the new release, while the existing PC versions are available through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The original PS4 and Xbox One editions remain separate products, with the Xbox One version playable on Xbox Series consoles through backwards compatibility.

KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind costs £32.99 digitally on the UK PlayStation Store, Xbox Store and Nintendo eShop. The £64.99 KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III] adds HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX and HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, covering the major preceding stories as well as Kingdom Hearts III and Re Mind. Physical copies of the full collection are listed for PS5 and Switch 2 through UK retailers, including GAME. Platform-exclusive Keyblades are included with purchases: Midnight Blue on PlayStation, Phantom Green on Xbox and Long Night on Switch 2.

Trailers, demo and current details

The 9 June 2026 Nintendo Direct confirmed that the three collections were coming to Switch 2, alongside the 8 October release date. The accompanying Square Enix and PlayStation announcement trailers showed the collection format, the three included products and the PS5, Xbox Series and Switch 2 versions; they did not present a new story campaign. On 11 June, Nintendo announced a free Switch 2 demo covering the opening section in Olympus and part of Toy Box. Olympus progress carries into the full game.

For context, the original 11 June 2018 E3 trailer revealed the Pirates of the Caribbean world, including ship combat aboard the Black Pearl, underwater and aerial action, and further appearances by Organization XIII. The 2026 releases retain the same game and story, with current Xbox listings promising 4K Ultra HD and 60 frames per second or more. The game was originally built with Unreal Engine 4.

What remains unconfirmed

Square Enix has not published a detailed technical comparison between the new PS5, Switch 2 and Xbox Series versions and the older editions. Exact UK launch times are also unannounced. There is no confirmed additional story content beyond Re Mind and its existing post-game episodes, and no PS Plus inclusion has been announced. Xbox lists cloud play through Game Pass subscriptions but says a game purchase is required, so the new version is not a Game Pass title.
