LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is TT Games’ broadest take on the Caped Crusader yet: a third-person action-adventure that combines an original Batman story, Arkham-influenced combat, character-based puzzles and a sizeable open-world Gotham. It launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on Friday, 22 May 2026, followed by the Nintendo Switch 2 version on Friday, 18 September. As of 27 September 2026, it is available on every announced platform, with its first major DLC and a new difficulty level also in place.

Story and setting
The campaign follows Bruce Wayne from his childhood trauma and training with the League of Shadows through to his emergence as Batman and the formation of his crime-fighting family. Jim Gordon, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman and Talia al Ghul are all playable, each bringing distinct gadgets, abilities and progression options. The villains include The Joker, The Penguin, Mr Freeze, Poison Ivy, Ra’s al Ghul, Bane and other familiar members of Batman’s rogues’ gallery.
This is not an adaptation of one film or comic. Instead, it is an original story that remixes recognisable scenes, characters and ideas from Batman’s film, television, comic-book and videogame history. Gotham City is the main hub, with districts, rooftops and landmarks including Arkham Asylum, Ace Chemicals, Wayne Tower and Gotham Botanical Gardens. The Batcave acts as a customisable base, complete with upgrades, trophies, vehicles and display items.
How it plays
The familiar LEGO formula remains intact: smash scenery, collect studs, solve environmental puzzles and use the right character’s gadget to open new routes. The difference is the combat. Batman and his allies use attack chains, counters, stealth takedowns and gadgets in a system clearly influenced by Rocksteady’s Arkham games. Batman can distract enemies with Batarangs or pull them in with the Batclaw, while other characters use equipment such as Gordon’s foam sprayer, Robin’s cable launcher and Catwoman’s whip.
There are seven main playable characters, 100 suits and outfits, more than 20 vehicles, and over 250 Batcave props and trophies. Gotham is filled with crimes, side activities, collectibles, challenges and traversal routes, allowing Batman to grapple, glide or drive across the city. The main game supports two-player split-screen co-op, but the second player is restricted to local play. There is no online multiplayer.
Post-launch content and updates
The Mayhem Collection launched on 18 September 2026 for Deluxe Edition owners and as a separate purchase. It adds The Joker and Harley Quinn as playable characters, a new story mission about their escape from Arkham Asylum, and Mayhem Mode, in which players cause timed chaos across Gotham while tackling new challenges and DC villains. The accompanying Sinister Pack contains seven outfits, a new Batmobile and five Batcave items.
The same September update added the Absolute difficulty level free to every owner, alongside optimisation, performance and quality-of-life improvements. A July update had already addressed stability and issues affecting missions, the Batpod camera, gadget aiming, Talia’s upgrades, open-world activities and Batcave items. No further DLC roadmap has been announced.
Platforms, editions and UK price
The game is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Steam and the Epic Games Store. There is no PS4, Xbox One or original Switch version. The standard digital edition is £59.99 in the UK, while the Deluxe Edition is £79.99; the £21.99 Deluxe upgrade is also sold separately on PlayStation and Xbox. The Deluxe Edition includes the base game, Arkham Trilogy, Batman Beyond and Party Music packs, plus the Mayhem Collection.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions offer the most consistent high-end presentation, although early PS5 testing reported a 60fps performance mode that could feel jittery. Nintendo Life’s Switch 2 review found occasional performance slips and reduced texture quality, but judged the port strong overall. The PC version requires Windows 11, 16GB of memory and 50GB of storage; Steam lists it as Steam Deck Verified. The game runs on Unreal Engine 5, replacing TT Games’ previous in-house technology.
Reception and verdict
The response has been positive, though not unanimous. VGC awarded it 4/5, praising the writing, humour, open-world Gotham and its Arkham-style combat while noting that the main missions are easy. Nintendo Life gave the Switch 2 version 8/10, highlighting its puzzle variety, co-op and funny script but pointing to repetitive combat and occasional technical compromises. The broad consensus is that it is more ambitious and more characterful than a routine LEGO tie-in, even if its open-world activities can become repetitive.
It is best suited to players who want a lighter, family-friendly Batman adventure rather than a serious replacement for Batman: Arkham. The combat is more involved than in earlier LEGO games, but the puzzles and difficulty remain accessible. With local co-op, a large amount of optional content and a steady stream of Batman references, it is an easy recommendation for fans who are happy to trade Arkham’s darkness for TT Games’ broader humour.
