What it is
Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault is a single-player action RPG with roguelite and shop-management elements. It keeps the original game’s central rhythm intact: explore dangerous dungeons, bring home valuable relics, sell them in your shop, then invest the profits in better equipment and a stronger town. The sequel moves from pixel art to colourful isometric 3D, adds deeper combat and inventory systems, and gives Will a new story set in the stranded village of Tresna. It launched in full on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, after a period of PC Early Access.

Story and setting
Will returns as the hero merchant, but this time he is stranded in Tresna, a distant village caught up in an interdimensional crisis. With no money and no obvious route home, he must reopen his shop, explore the worlds connected to the Endless Vault and help the local community rebuild. The story centres on Moloch, an interdimensional collector who has claimed Will’s homeland, and the campaign eventually brings Will’s journey in Tresna to a conclusion.
Tresna is more than a home base. Its residents, vendors and businesses develop as you spend money and complete quests, opening new opportunities for equipment, shop improvements and further expeditions. The setting mixes fantasy with stranger science-fiction ideas, giving the sequel a more varied look than the first game’s traditional dungeon environments.
How it plays
The main loop is split between adventuring and trading. In the dungeons, Will fights enemies and bosses using several weapon classes, gadgets, armour sets and perks. Runs are built around risk management: you decide how far to push, which relics to carry and how to arrange them in your backpack. Relics can interact with one another, so limited space becomes a puzzle rather than a simple storage problem. The deeper you go, the better the potential rewards, but failure can cost valuable progress and loot.
Back in Tresna, you arrange your finds in the shop, set prices and read customer reactions. Shop perks, events, decorations and upgrades give the trading side more structure than a straightforward sell-and-repeat system. The game remains firmly single-player, with no co-operative or competitive online mode. It is designed to work offline on PlayStation 5 and is listed as single-player on Xbox and Steam.
What arrived with version 1.0
The 1.0 release is substantially larger than the Early Access version. It adds the conclusion to Will’s main story, new quests and cutscenes, four Endless Weapon Aspects, a new Machine Gun gadget, Endless armour, new vendors, extra Codex entries and more shop customisation. It also introduces Shop Level 5, the Bomb perk path and the seventh Endless Vault threshold.
The biggest addition for experienced players is the Infinite Endless Vault, an escalating post-game challenge in which each threshold must be completed in a single run. Version 1.0 also adds Hardcore Mode, which makes death much more punishing, along with new cosmetics and rewards. Since launch, the main confirmed post-release update has been the 10 September PC hotfix. It added a DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 choice and addressed crashes, loading freezes, quest problems, enemy behaviour, dungeon softlocks and several weapon and perk bugs. The developers said console fixes were being prepared, but did not give a dated console rollout for those changes.
Platforms, editions and UK price
The game is available digitally on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The standard digital edition is listed at £24.99 on PlayStation Store and Xbox, with the Switch 2 version also listed at £24.99. UK PC listings place the standard edition at the same £24.99 price. Xbox Game Pass includes the game on PC Game Pass, Game Pass Premium and Game Pass Ultimate. It is not currently listed as part of PlayStation Plus.
A boxed release is scheduled for 13 November 2026 on PC, PS5 and Switch 2 through Silver Lining Interactive. The reported UK prices are £24.99 for the standard PC edition, £34.99 for standard PS5 and £44.99 for standard Switch 2. Collector’s Editions are listed at £49.99 on PC, £59.99 on PS5 and £69.99 on Switch 2, with a box, digital artbook, art cards, patches, poster, stickers and a metal coin. The Xbox version has no announced physical edition. The digital Zen Patio Pack is a cosmetic add-on, while Steam also lists the soundtrack and artbook separately.
Performance and critical reception
Switch 2 is the version with the clearest performance caveat. Nintendo Life found docked play comfortably stable at above 30 frames per second, but reported occasional slowdown in handheld mode, particularly in Tresna and busy fights, alongside inconsistent loading during area transitions. The move to 3D looks attractive and the shop-and-dungeon loop remains strong, but buyers who prioritise smooth performance should consider PS5, Xbox or a suitably capable PC instead.
Reception has been positive overall, though not unanimous. Nintendo Life awarded the Switch 2 version 8/10, praising the revised combat, backpack management and visual style while noting the handheld slowdown. CGMagazine gave the PS5 version 6.5/10, arguing that the move away from the original’s pixel-art identity does not always work. Steam’s page currently displays a Metacritic score of 80, while user reviews are Very Positive overall at 82 per cent in English, with recent reviews lower at 69 per cent. The broad verdict is that the sequel’s core loop still works, but its technical rough edges and heavier roguelite structure will not suit everyone.
