Story and setting

There is no conventional story campaign announced. Instead, Wuhu Island is the game’s setting: a resort where you can play sports, explore by land, sea and air, and take on increasingly capable opponents.

The sightseeing activities let you travel around the island by skateboard, Power Cruising or Prop Plane. You can search for Spocco Photos, chase dolphins, find hidden hibiscus flowers and discover different views of the resort. Sightseeing can be played across daytime, evening and night settings, while playing sports earns Spocco Points that can be exchanged for character customisation items.

How it plays

Nintendo has confirmed 12 sports: Boxing, Table Tennis, Archery, Tennis, Volleyball, Bowling, Basketball, Golf, Thumb Wrestling, Skateboarding, Power Cruising and Prop Plane. Jump Rope is also included as a warm-up activity, but is not counted among the 12 sports.

Joy-Con 2 controllers are used as rackets, bows, handlebars and other pieces of equipment. Skateboarding uses Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, Power Cruising uses tilting and steering motions, and Prop Plane lets you fly by tilting the controller. The sports include variations such as 100-Pin Bowling, Three-Point Contest in Basketball, different golf lengths, and sightseeing, sprint and free-play options in the leisure activities.

For solo play, the offline Island Crown mode lets you rise through sport-specific rankings and challenge Island Champions and Island Legends. Local play supports one to four people on a single Switch 2 system, with Nintendo showing split-screen multiplayer in pre-release material. Online play includes Pro League matches against players of a similar level and Casual Online Play, where wins and losses are not recorded.

Trailers and showcases

The 9 June 2026 Nintendo Direct announced the game, confirmed its 22 October release date and introduced the 12-sport line-up, Wuhu Island, Sportsmates and Mii characters, and the different ways Joy-Con 2 would control each activity. The announcement showed the game as playable both offline and online, but did not specify the online player limit.

The 9 September 2026 Nintendo Direct focused on the island beyond the arenas. It showed free exploration, Spocco Photos, hidden flowers, dolphin-chasing and the offline Island Crown mode, where players work up the rankings towards Island Champions and Legends. Nintendo also confirmed that sports played in any mode award Spocco Points for customisation.

Platforms, editions and UK price

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s store listing supports TV and tabletop modes, and the estimated download size is 16GB. The game is not announced for the original Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation or Xbox.

The standard UK digital price is £41.99, while the physical edition has a £49.99 RRP. Pre-orders are listed through Nintendo eShop and retailers including Nintendo Store, Argos, Smyths Toys and Currys. Retailer discounts and any pre-order extras can vary, so check the terms before ordering.

Should you pre-order?

The strongest reason to pre-order is if you already own a Switch 2 and want a game built around local motion play, with enough solo structure to make the sports more than a collection of quick matches. Island Crown and island exploration give solo players clearer objectives than the basic events alone.

Waiting is more sensible if online competition is your main interest. Nintendo has confirmed Pro League and Casual Online Play, but not how many people can join an online session or how local and online players will be combined. There are also no reviews yet and no confirmed post-launch content plan.
