Story and setting
Soul serves the Order, an elusive organisation that controls much of the martial world. After being blamed for the murder of its patriarch, he is gravely wounded and saved by a makeshift cure that will keep him alive for just 66 days. Hunted by former allies, he must uncover who engineered the conspiracy before the treatment fails.
The game takes place in the Phantom World, with much of the action centred on the Wulin. S-GAME describes it as a semi-open world made from several handcrafted maps rather than one uninterrupted open-world landscape. Chinese martial arts, occult traditions, mechanical prosthetics, ruined industrial spaces and modern rock music combine into what the studio calls “kungfupunk”. The tone is closer to dark fantasy and folk horror than to a straightforward historical martial-arts adventure.
How it plays
Combat is viewed from the third person and is built around flowing combos, quick reactions and dramatic counters. You can block, dodge, deflect and parry attacks, then punish openings with executions or counterattacks. The first gameplay trailer showed a loadout with two main weapons and two Phantom Edges, while the later State of Play confirmed more than 30 primary weapons and 25 secondary Phantom Edges. Weapons can be upgraded, paired with accessories and reforged so that upgrade materials can be recovered when you change your build.
Exploration includes hidden passages, mechanisms, secrets and side quests. Helping people encountered in the Wulin can open different story paths and provide more context about the conspiracy. The announced difficulty options are Wayfarer, intended for players who mainly want to follow the story, Hellwalker, which gives enemies more advanced and adaptive intelligence, and Sixty-Six Days, described as the hardest option. Donnie Yen is a creative consultant and performs Mó Yuan, Soul’s father, through facial and motion capture.
Trailers and showcases
The announcement trailer, shown at the PlayStation Showcase on 24 May 2023, introduced Soul, the 66-day premise and the Phantom World’s blend of wuxia, fantasy, science fiction and folk horror. S-GAME’s first gameplay trailer followed on 7 June 2024, showing high-speed combat, reactive parries and dodges, multiple weapon types and the planned global demo tour. A hands-on report from Summer Game Fest 2024 also demonstrated blocking, parrying, dodging and boss fights.
The Year of the Snake trailer on 21 January 2025 focused on the Seven Stars boss encounter, in which seven swordsmen attack as one before the surviving leader is controlled like a puppet. The Return to Pangzhen RTX reveal on 18 August 2025 showed the rain-soaked Pangzhen Township with ray tracing and DLSS 4. The December 2025 release-date trailer showed new story moments, enemies, weapons, exploration and progression, but its original 9 September 2026 date was later replaced. A new 11-minute pre-order trailer arrived on 12 August 2026, including wagon combat and the reveal of Donnie Yen’s role. The dedicated State of Play on 17 August, shown at 3am BST on 18 August in the UK, expanded on weapons, builds, side quests, difficulty options and the Wulin.
Platforms, editions and UK buying
Phantom Blade Zero is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The UK PlayStation Store lists a Standard Edition at £54.99 and a Digital Deluxe Edition at £64.99. The Deluxe Edition includes the full game, the Wulin Legend and Blood-Steel Form outfits, a digital artbook and a digital soundtrack. PC editions are confirmed, but a separate UK pound price is not currently listed on the storefront pages checked.
Pre-ordering unlocks the Treasure Basin accessory, which increases Remnant Dust drops by 10%, and the Legacy outfit early. S-GAME says both items can also be earned through normal progression. The UK PlayStation Store currently lists a 2:00am UTC launch time, equivalent to 3:00am BST on 29 October 2026. The game is designed for offline single-player play, and PlayStation lists it as PS5 Pro Enhanced.
What remains unconfirmed
A UK PEGI number has not been published on the official pages checked. The PlayStation Store does carry a Strong Violence warning, so expect a mature action game, but that should not be treated as a final PEGI classification. There is also no confirmed boxed PS5 edition, collector’s edition or UK high-street retailer listing from S-GAME or Sony at present.
No day-one PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass inclusion has been announced. Xbox and Nintendo versions have not been confirmed either. The exact UK PC price and PC unlock time remain unclear, despite Steam and Epic listing the game for PC release.
