Story and setting
The story takes place one year after Professor Layton and the Unwound Future. Layton travels to Steam Bison, an American town whose rapid development, driven by revolutionary steam technology, has taken it beyond even London’s level of technological progress. A mysterious incident draws him back into an investigation with Luke, who now lives in America because of his family circumstances and has earned a reputation locally as the “Great Detective Luke”.
The confirmed cast includes inventor Eggmuffin Sonder, the twin sisters Elinora and Elida Allinston, wealthy developer Bolt Allinston, Sheriff Bobsley, fortune-teller Mystella and an eagle named Falcon. Trailers have also shown the ghostly gunslinger Gunman King Joe, although LEVEL5 has not explained his full role or confirmed every detail of the central mystery.
How it plays
This is a puzzle-filled fantasy adventure built around solving riddles, investigating a mystery and progressing through a substantial story. The official material shows Layton and Luke moving through Steam Bison, talking to its residents, gathering information and tackling new puzzles. The puzzles are being created with QuizKnock, the Japanese education and entertainment group led by Takuji Izawa. LEVEL5 has described the game as having the biggest collection of puzzles in the series to date, though a final number has not been given.
The Tokyo Game Show 2025 demo demonstrated Joy-Con 2’s mouse-like controls on Switch 2, while the 2026 demo centred on Layton and Luke meeting Eggmuffin and solving new puzzles.
