What it is
Resident Evil 2 is Capcom’s ground-up remake of the 1998 survival-horror classic, originally released in 2019. For Nintendo Switch 2, it arrives as Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, bringing the full remake and its previously released bonus content to Nintendo hardware in a version designed for TV, tabletop and handheld play. The Switch 2 release is still forthcoming, although the remake itself has been available on other platforms for several years.

Story and setting
The game begins in Raccoon City during a catastrophic biological outbreak. Leon S. Kennedy arrives for his first shift as a rookie police officer, while Claire Redfield enters the city looking for her brother. Their plans are overtaken by a rapidly spreading infection that leaves the streets and buildings filled with hostile zombies.
Leon and Claire have separate campaigns that cover the crisis from different perspectives. Their routes share the same broader story but present different encounters, locations and narrative details. The remake follows the basic outline of the 1998 game while rearranging events, deepening character relationships and redesigning areas such as the police station.
How it plays
Resident Evil 2 is a single-player third-person survival-horror game built around exploration, environmental puzzles, combat and resource management. The over-the-shoulder camera keeps Leon or Claire in view while making close encounters with zombies more immediate. Ammunition and healing items need to be used carefully, and not every threat is best dealt with by shooting it.
The remake uses Capcom’s RE Engine to create a detailed, photorealistic version of Raccoon City. Zombies react visibly to damage, while returning threats such as Lickers have greater freedom of movement than they did in the original game. The result is a more direct and modern control system than the 1998 release, but it remains deliberately tense rather than turning into a straightforward action shooter.
Switch 2 edition and contents
The Nintendo Switch 2 release is officially titled Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition. It includes the full main game, Leon’s Arklay Sheriff, Noir and '98 costumes, Claire’s Military, Noir, Elza Walker and '98 costumes, three Samurai Edge weapon models based on Albert, Jill and Chris, and an Original Ver. Soundtrack Swap.
Nintendo lists support for TV, tabletop and handheld modes, HDR on compatible displays, surround sound and Save Data Cloud. It is listed as a one-player game. Nintendo Switch Online is only relevant to the cloud-save feature; the game does not require online multiplayer because there is no multiplayer component.
Trailers and showcases
Nintendo announced the Switch 2 versions during its Nintendo Direct on 9 September 2026, presenting Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition alongside Switch 2 versions of Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition. The presentation confirmed the 16 October digital release and showed the three remakes as part of a wider survival-horror line-up.
Capcom’s announcement trailer, published on the same day, was a shared trailer for all three games rather than a detailed Resident Evil 2 feature presentation. It confirmed the Switch 2 platform, the digital and physical release dates and the survival-horror focus. On 16 September, a 30-minute handheld gameplay video provided the first extended public look at the three games running on Switch 2. It showed Resident Evil 2 in portable play, but did not establish docked-mode performance or technical targets.
UK release, editions and price
The digital Nintendo Switch 2 release is scheduled for Friday, 16 October 2026. Capcom and Nintendo have also confirmed a physical version for 29 January 2027. Nintendo UK is taking digital pre-orders for Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, with a listed UK price of £34.99. No separate Standard Edition has been announced for Switch 2.
The game is rated PEGI 18 in the UK. The rating reflects its violent and graphic horror content. There is no announced PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass version of the Switch 2 release, and those services do not apply to Nintendo’s platform.
What we still don’t know
Capcom has not confirmed a UK launch time, so there is no verified Nintendo eShop release hour in BST or GMT. The physical edition’s UK price, retailer availability and exact packaging format have also not been announced. It is therefore too early to say whether the physical release will use a full cartridge, a game-key card or another format.
Switch 2-specific resolution, frame-rate and graphics options remain unconfirmed. Capcom has shown handheld footage and confirmed the supported play modes, but has not published performance targets, upgrade details for owners of the game on other platforms or a Switch 2 demo.
