What it is

Silent Hill: Townfall is a full-length, self-contained psychological horror game from Glasgow studio Screen Burn Interactive, the team formerly known as No Code. It moves the series away from its familiar American setting to the fictional Scottish island of St. Amelia in 1996, where Simon Ordell is drawn into a mystery involving the town’s abandoned streets, fractured memories and something lurking behind the static. It released in the UK on Thursday 24 September 2026 for PS5 and PC, with Deluxe Edition buyers receiving 48 hours of early access.

Story and setting

Simon Ordell arrives at St. Amelia after being called back to the island to “put things right”. The settlement appears deserted, but its homes, shorelines, clinic and public spaces are full of traces left by the people who once lived there. Voices reaching Simon through a portable CRT television gradually introduce Zoe, a local nurse, and Richard, another figure whose connection to Simon is initially unclear. The story keeps its central mystery deliberately obscured, allowing the island’s history and Simon’s own past to emerge through exploration, conversations and environmental details.

The Scottish setting is more than a change of scenery. St. Amelia’s foggy harbour, weathered housing and 1990s technology give Townfall a distinctly British texture, while the Otherworld twists familiar spaces into harsher, more abstract environments. It is a standalone story rather than a continuation requiring knowledge of earlier Silent Hill games, although it uses recognisable series ideas such as guilt, psychological trauma, distorted reality and a world that reflects its characters.

How it plays

Townfall is the first full-length Silent Hill game presented entirely from a first-person perspective. Exploration, stealth, combat and puzzle solving are all built around that viewpoint. Simon carries a limited selection of weapons and tools, and encounters generally encourage you to avoid danger where possible, fight when necessary and pay close attention to the surrounding environment. Melee weapons can be swung and blocked with, while firearms provide a more direct but noisier option.

The defining gadget is the CRTV, a pocket television that reworks the traditional Silent Hill radio. By tuning it to unstable analogue signals, you can uncover fragments of the story, find clues and detect nearby threats. That makes the CRTV part of both the stealth system and the puzzle design rather than a simple warning device. The puzzles are usually grounded in the places where they appear, with their solutions revealing something about St. Amelia or the people connected to it. Your actions can also influence the ending, with multiple outcomes available.

Platforms, editions and UK price

The game is available on PS5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Konami has not announced an Xbox or Nintendo version. On PlayStation, the Standard Edition has a UK RRP of £44.99, while the digital-only Deluxe Edition costs £49.99. The Deluxe Edition includes the game, an alternate outfit for Simon and a Bonus Application containing a digital artbook and soundtrack. Its 48-hour early-access period has now ended.

The PS5 version is PS5 Pro Enhanced and supports DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, 3D Audio and optional motion controls for CRTV interactions. The game is also playable offline and is listed as a one-player experience. The PC release uses Unreal Engine 5 and includes standard PC features such as Steam Cloud and achievements.

Launch support and performance

There is no separate multiplayer component, live-service structure or additional playable mode attached to Townfall. Since launch, the official Steam news feed has recorded a fix for an issue that prevented some Deluxe Edition content from unlocking. Konami and Screen Burn have also acknowledged performance-related problems affecting the Steam version and confirmed that an update is in development, but no release date or detailed list of fixes had been given by 27 September 2026.

That makes the PS5 version the safer choice for a straightforward console experience, particularly if you own a PS5 Pro. PC buyers should be aware that early coverage and launch reports have highlighted stuttering and optimisation concerns, although the game is otherwise available through both major PC storefronts. No story expansion or post-launch campaign has been announced.

Critical reception

The critical response has been positive overall, but not unanimous. IGN awarded Townfall 8/10, Eurogamer gave it 4/5, PC Gamer scored it 89/100 and GamesRadar+ awarded 4.5/5. Reviewers have consistently praised the detailed Scottish setting, oppressive sound design, CRTV-led puzzles and the slow-burn story, with several describing it as one of the stronger recent Silent Hill entries.

The main criticism concerns the stealth encounters, especially sections involving the enemy known as The Weight. VGC gave the game 3/5, arguing that these sequences disrupt the otherwise excellent atmosphere and momentum. That split is a useful guide to what Townfall is: an unusually convincing psychological horror adventure whose strongest ideas are sometimes undermined by demanding, occasionally frustrating stealth design.

Not yet confirmed

  • No Xbox or Nintendo platform has been announced.
  • No story DLC, campaign expansion or additional playable mode has been announced.
  • The Steam performance update has no confirmed release date or published list of fixes.
  • No inclusion in PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass has been announced.
