Valor Mortis is One More Level’s first-person Soulslike, following the studio’s Ghostrunner games into a very different kind of historical nightmare. It is set in an alternate 19th-century Europe where Napoleon’s conquest has stalled, a plague has spread across the continent and the dead are returning as monsters. You play William Dowsett, a resurrected English soldier of the Grande Armée, using period weapons and supernatural abilities to survive a war that has become something far stranger. Valor Mortis is due in the UK on Tuesday, 13 October 2026 and remains unreleased as of 27 September.

Story and setting
William Dowsett volunteered for Napoleon’s army because he believed the Emperor’s vision of a unified Europe was worth fighting for. He wakes on a battlefield with little memory of his past, apparently the only soldier left standing with his mind intact. A corrupting plague now runs through his veins, giving him dangerous powers while turning soldiers and civilians into abominations. Napoleon’s voice speaks inside William’s head, but the resurrected soldier is also drawn towards the Shrike, a rebel leader fighting the Empire in occupied Eastern Europe.
The story trailer introduced the Shrike alongside William, his fellow soldier James Stewart and the Polish craftsman Lucjan Skawiński. Napoleon is voiced by French actor Vincent Cassel. The game’s central mystery concerns the plague, William’s resurrection and the conspiracy behind the supernatural war, with historical figures and events mixed with horror rather than presented as a straightforward retelling of the Napoleonic Wars.
How it plays
Valor Mortis is played entirely from a first-person viewpoint, combining deliberate Soulslike combat with the mobility and close-range impact One More Level established in Ghostrunner. The confirmed combat system includes parries, dashes, stamina-based movement, visceral finishers and a mixture of melee and ranged weapons. Swords, rapiers, firearms and supernatural attacks can be combined, with each death intended to offer another opportunity to grow stronger.
The plague powers are not simply cosmetic abilities. They can enhance attacks and unlock new ways to deal with enemies, while the game’s high-mobility movement is used both in combat and exploration. Levels are described as Metroidvania-inspired, with environmental secrets and routes that reward returning to earlier areas with new abilities. The main threats include plague-ridden soldiers from Napoleon’s Eternal Guard and other supernatural creatures. One More Level has described the main story as lasting around 20 hours, although that figure is a development estimate rather than a verified playtime.
Trailers and demos
Valor Mortis was revealed during the gamescom Opening Night Live pre-show on 19 August 2025. The cinematic reveal established the alternate Napoleonic setting, the resurrected soldier premise and the game’s first-person action focus. A gameplay and feature trailer shown on 9 April 2026 provided a clearer look at combat, supernatural powers, weapons, enemies and the ruined European environments.
The Xbox Games Showcase trailer on 7 June 2026 announced a 24 September release date and revealed Vincent Cassel as Napoleon’s voice. That date was later replaced: on 11 June, One More Level moved the launch to 13 October because September had become too crowded, while also allowing more time to respond to feedback from the Steam demo. The latest major trailer, shown at gamescom Opening Night Live on 25 August 2026, concentrated on the story and supporting cast, introduced the Shrike and showed further gameplay. A public Steam demo was also made available during the 2026 preview period, though its availability should be checked on the store before relying on it.
UK release, editions and price
Valor Mortis launches in the UK on Tuesday, 13 October 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PlayStation Store lists the release time as 18:00 UTC, which works out at 19:00 BST in Britain on that date.
