What it is
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is a fast, bloody first-person shooter from Bristol developer Auroch Digital. It follows directly from 2023’s Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, keeping the sprite-based retro-FPS style while expanding the campaign with a second playable character, branching routes, new worlds, more weapons and four Chaos god factions.
It launches in the UK on Wednesday 14 October 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is planned for later, but it does not have a confirmed release date. As of 27 September 2026, the game is not yet available in full, although a free Steam demo is playable.

Story and setting
The campaign begins after the events of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun. Ultramarine Sternguard Veteran Malum Caedo and Sister of Battle Celestian Nyra Veyrath are sent across several worlds to cleanse the corruption powering a daemonic machine belonging to Vashtorr the Arkifane, a powerful demigod of Chaos. Their objective is to stop Vashtorr and banish him back to the Warp.
The enemies come from the four Chaos god factions: Nurgle, Tzeentch, Khorne and Slaanesh, alongside returning Black Legion forces. Confirmed threats include Daemonettes, Noise Marines, Tormentors, Blightlord Terminators, Scarab Occult Terminators, Bloodletters, Bloodcrushers and Khorne Berzerkers. The Death Korps of Krieg will also appear as Imperial allies during several levels.
How it plays
Boltgun 2 is a single-player, first-person shooter built around fast movement, close-range violence and heavy weapons. Malum Caedo brings the familiar Space Marine approach, including his chainsword and a broad arsenal of bolters, shotguns and other weapons. Nyra is designed as a faster, more mobile alternative, using a Power Sword, Bolt Pistol, flamers and melta weapons. Her Fervent Slide can carry her through cultists, while her grenades can be aimed in slowed time, detonated early or shot out of the air.
The campaign is branching rather than entirely linear, with different routes containing unique levels. Confirmed environments include towering hive-city areas, jungle mangrove swamps, frozen battlefields and an overrun Imperial facility. The Steam demo offers two levels, multiple difficulty settings and secrets, while the full game adds a navigation guide to help players move through its larger battlefields without losing the forward momentum.
Trailers and showcases
The 22 May 2025 Warhammer Skulls reveal introduced the sequel, confirming a branching single-player campaign, new worlds including a hive city and mangrove jungle, and the PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. The 26 February 2026 IGN Fan Fest gameplay trailer gave the first substantial look at combat against Slaanesh and Death Guard forces, including the new faction-specific enemy behaviour.
A 29 April 2026 PlayStation Blog feature detailed Daemonettes, Blightlord Terminators and Scarab Occult Terminators, and revealed Death Korps of Krieg allies. The 21 May 2026 Warhammer Skulls gameplay trailer launched alongside the Steam demo, showing Malum and Nyra fighting through a Nurgle-infested Death World and a frozen Khorne battlefield. Finally, the 26 August release-date trailer confirmed the 14 October launch, revealed Vashtorr as the main antagonist and announced Mick Gordon’s music for the final boss battle.
Platforms, UK price and subscriptions
The launch platforms are PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Nintendo Switch 2 has been confirmed for a later release, but no date has been given. There is no confirmed version for the original Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
The UK PlayStation Store lists the standard digital edition at £19.99, with a temporary PlayStation Plus pre-order offer reducing it to £17.99 until launch. The PlayStation listing gives a 4pm UTC release time, equivalent to 5pm BST in the UK on 14 October. Steam and Xbox UK pages do not currently show a confirmed UK price. No launch inclusion in Xbox Game Pass or the PlayStation Plus games catalogue has been announced.
What remains unconfirmed
The publisher has not announced a physical UK edition, deluxe edition, collector’s edition or retailer-exclusive bonus. Prices for the Xbox and PC versions have not been formally displayed on their UK storefront pages, so the PS5 price should not be treated as a confirmed cross-platform RRP.
The full campaign length, complete weapon list, every enemy type, post-launch content and the Switch 2 release date are also unconfirmed. Unreal Engine 5 is widely listed by third-party databases, but the developer and publisher have not formally identified the engine in the official pages checked for this guide.
Should you pre-order?
The free Steam demo is the most useful way to judge whether Boltgun 2’s retro visuals, fast combat and level design suit you. It does not answer how the full branching campaign will differ between its routes, and no equivalent console demo has been announced.
For PS5 owners, the current £17.99 PlayStation Plus offer is cheaper than the £19.99 standard price. Everyone else should wait for a confirmed Xbox or Steam price, or for physical and alternative editions to be announced, before committing.
